The Guernica and The War

Nouran Hatem

In 1937, Guernica in Spain was ruined by a brutal aerial bombing during the Spanish Civil War, leaving a large part of the city in ruin and many people were dead. What happened shocked the world and inspired Picasso to paint his iconic painting, which became a powerful symbol of the horrors of war. Although what was happening, the spirit of the Guernica community permeated. In the following decades, residents worked to rebuild their homes and restore their city. Today, Guernica stands as the city of peace, celebrating its history through the annual Peace Festival that celebrates resilience, inviting visitors to reflect on the lessons learned from the past (the war) and the importance of helping each other. Guernica's transformation from darkness to a symbol of hope reflects the enduring power of community.
