Michael Jackson was one of the rare artists whose influence has transcended generations. His music resonated with people of all ages and social backgrounds, something that’s not that easy to achieve as a Black American artist who somehow cared about speaking of his own issues. Even in today’s era of digital content and TikTok trends, his iconic dance moves and groovy beats have survived the test of time.
When I thought of a musical figure to talk about in a video essay, I couldn’t think of a better alternative than Michel Jackson, not just because of his music or talent, but also because of the memories I have that feature him and his music. I still remember the first time I was introduced to Micheal; I was sitting in front of the TV with my mom, and I asked her what this crowd was all about in TV and she told me that it was Michael’s funeral and started to talk to me about him.
He wasn’t in our world anymore but still, he had so much influence on me when I started building my musical knowledge. I listened to his music on my dad’s computer and practiced his dance moves in front of the mirror. His extraordinary legacy is almost impossible for most artists to build something like it, perhaps his music and visuals were so well crafted that they reached all these people’s hearts and souls.
